These may differ substantially from current thinking or practice, and may not yet be supported by substantial preliminary data. This program is intended to encourage research that will explore new ideas, and advance early stages of projects. For example, such projects could assess the feasibility of a novel area of investigation or a new experimental system that has the potential to enhance neuroscience related research.

Another example could include the unique and innovative use of an existing methodology to explore a new area of neuroscience. Here are some important points to consider before applying:. To assess the relevance of an application topic, applicants are strongly encouraged to contact NINDS program staff before submitting. The goal is to address basic questions and to interrogate concepts in biology, behavior, and pathophysiology that will provide insight into understanding neurological disorders.

Such studies may seek to understand a biological or behavioral process, or the mechanism of action of an intervention. To take advantage of higher success rates, Early Stage Investigators are encouraged to consider the R01 funding mechanism. There are no plans to increase the funding for R21 program. R03 Small Grant Program Supports new research projects that: 1 lead to a defined product, resource or "deliverable" that has inherent value to the neuroscience community; 2 regardless of whether they are hypothesis-driven, will generate an important and potentially publishable unit of information or dataset; or 3 focus on secondary analysis of clinical data sets.

Priority will be given to research proposals that include a detailed plan for the sharing of resources and data generated under this award. These grants are intended to create a research opportunity for scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH programs to support the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. Awards will provide support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects.

Support generally is restricted in level of support and in time. The R61 award is the first phase to support innovative exploratory and development research activities. This activity code is used in lieu of the R21 activity code when larger budgets are required to establish feasibility for the project.

Phase II -The R33 award is to provide a second phase for the support for innovative exploratory and development research activities initiated under the R61 mechanism. Funding support should lead to increased recruitment, mentoring, and training in the scientific and technology workforce. All subprojects must be united in a common theme and be interdependent. These awards will support basic, translational, and clinical research, but will not be used to support clinical trials or to provide patient services. Each Center Core is composed of one or more research cores, each of which enriches the effectiveness of ongoing research, and promotes new research directions.

A Center Core supports individual neuroscience research projects by providing necessary resources and performing required services that would be difficult or impractical to provide in individual labs.Pre-Award and Post-Award Processes. Projects of limited cost or scope that use widely accepted approaches and methods are better suited for the R03 small grant mechanism see R03 announcement citation.

All investigators should consult the list of participating ICs shown below as well as the IC staff listed as contacts to determine if an R21 application is appropriate. Investigators are strongly encouraged to consult with the appropriate NIH program administrator about their proposed research project during the concept development stage of the application.

All R21 grant applications will be assigned to the ICs according to standard PHS referral guidelines and specific program interests. Applications that are assigned to an IC that does not participate in this program may be returned without review. There is also a list of ICs that do not accept unsolicited R21 applications.

NIDA uses the R21 mechanism to provide support for projects in the early stages of developing or testing innovative ideas in any area relevant to the mission of the Institute. Since this mechanism is intended to enable an investigator to receive support for the early and conceptual stages of an innovative research question or approach, preliminary data specific to the proposed project are not expected.

Novel scientific ideas, model systems, tools, agents, targets and technologies that have the potential to advance research in substantial ways and relevant to the mission of NIDA are appropriate for this mechanism. Long-term projects or projects designed to establish knowledge in a well-established area should not use the R21mechanism.
